As some of you may know, my TV setup is all controlled by a PC (my old main PC – Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 1Gb RAM with various HDDs internally and attached via USB) running Vista Ultimate.  I use the Media Centre software that comes with Vista, and control it all with a Microsoft Remote Control.

I should also add, that the PC has a PCI Digital TV tuner card in it as well, which has been ’sort of’ working previously, but is now working perfectly since I installed a plugin that allows the TV Guide portion of Media Centre to work (out of the box, Microsoft doesn’t support Australian TV Listings) which also seems to have resolved an issue I had where channel 10 didn’t seem to tune in correctly.

Anyways, I’ve been searching around for a plugin or addon for a while that allows me to stream content directly from the net – the XP MCE edition I used before I upgraded to Vista used to have a few different ‘Online Media’ applications that did just that – however Vista’s Media Centre has 2 – one is Telstra BigPond’s online service which costs a small fortune to subscribe to, and the other is just music videos (I haven’t even bothered to click on that one so I’m not sure if its a subscription service as well).

I happened to find a plugin called TV Tonic – I remembered this from the XP MCE online service selection so I was overjoyed when I discovered that it was still free, and would install for Vista’s Media Centre.  I installed the plugin and it works a treat!

The service has ALL of the regular tech shows I download too – I’m not sure I’ll actually use TV Tonic for these, as I’d still like to download the videos via the RSS feeds I subscribe to in Outlook.  There is a whole bunch more programming that I’m going to sift through and check out over the coming days – I’ll let you know if there’s anything interesting and new that stands out when I come across them.
